English Language Violations

(aired 2/19/10)

This week I’m exploring the interesting element of linguistic mistakes in songs. I first thought of this idea as a radio show theme when I heard “Breaking Every Rule Language English” by Cornershop (although I still haven’t been able to track down a copy of the lyrics anywhere). As a piece of popular culture, many artists have chosen culturized twists of the English language in their song titles. Music is a form of expression that can defy the rules – sometimes tossing ‘em out the window. The songs on today’s show contain abbreviations, numbers & single letters as words, slang, objective/subjective pronoun switches and basic grammar defiance. I turned off my editor brain and opened my mind to language expression outside the rules. Thanx to all u listeners 4 the kool song ideas!
