(aired 11/13/09)

unclassifiableI’ve now had the pleasure of hosting 25 official broadcasts of Maya’s Mix. The categories have been: mothers, sweet songs, the sun, lower body, upper body, foreign languages, fathers, cats & dogs, Michael Jackson songs, birds, trains, numbers, female names, misters, the moon, states, gold & silver, cities, jobs, questions, fire, drinks, flying, Las Vegas and Halloween. What a spectrum! (Note that last week wasn’t a real Maya’s Mix show, since I accommodated to some technical difficulties by playing some songs spontaneously for 45 minutes.)

I recently realized that there are some songs I love and want to play that don’t necessarily have a classifiable topic by their titles or lyrics. So I decided that my theme this week is: no theme. It’s a mix of great music that flows well together by sound, despite having no unifying subject matter. An extra perk is that almost none of the artists have ever been played on this show yet, so we get to hear some new voices and styles. Perhaps you’ll think of your own creative interpretation of a theme to this week’s songlist:

  1. Born That Way – Anja Garbarek
  2. Gnossienne No.1 – Erik Satie
  3. More Than Words – Extreme
  4. Say Hey (I Love You) – Michael Franti & Spearhead, featuring Cherine Anderson [suggested by Mark Mezadourian]
  5. Nobody’s Fault But Mine – The Blind Boys Of Alabama [album suggested by Fred Perloff]
  6. Come On Petunia – The Blow
  7. In Step – Girl Talk
  8. One Of These Things First – Nick Drake [suggested by Claire Robbins]
  9. Track 04 – Marimba Mike
  10. Rock Me Now – Metric
  11. Sesame Street – Nancie de Ross
  12. Sesame Street – Rugburns
  13. The People In Your Neighborhood – Sesame Street [originally suggested by Derek Keevil for my 9/11/09 “Jobs” show.]
  14. Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing – John Legend
  15. Right Now – Mocean Worker
  16. Because – Across the Universe soundtrack (Dana Fuchs, Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, Martin Luther Mccoy and T.V. Carpio)
  17. Keeping Up – Arthur Russell
  18. They – Jem
  19. In The Waiting Line – Zero 7
  20. Surround Me – Ben Taylor
  21. Life Within A Life – Jesca Hoop
