R.E.M. Tribute

(aired 9/30/11)

“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” – R.E.M.

On September 21st, the band from Athens, GA issued the announcement above – calling it quits after three decades producing music together. In tribute, all the songs on today’s Maya’s Mix are R.E.M. songs. Almost all are cover versions by a range of different artists, while I also included a couple originals.

Note: unfortunately some technical glitch happened when I taped this show, and my recorded version is distorted due to the high volume. It’s a bummer, since the show included interesting facts and unique songs. 🙁 The original recording is still listenable and available below, but be warned that most of it sounds muffled. Thus I’ve provided links to some of the individual songs online, in order for you to be able hear better-quality versions. Click here to hear my own medley of “Losing My Religion” cover clips. Each song below also cites the R.E.M. album that the original version is on and the year that album was released (in gray italics).

As Michael Stipe shared recently, “A wise man once said – ‘the skill in attending a party is knowing when it’s time to leave.’ We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we’re going to walk away from it.”

Sep 16 2011

(aired 9/16/11)

“Whenever a taboo is broken, something good happens, something vitalizing. Taboos after all are only hangovers, the product of diseased minds, you might say, of fearsome people who hadn’t the courage to live and who under the guise of morality and religion have imposed these things upon us.” ~Henry Miller

What is actually taboo? It depends on who you ask. All the songs on this week’s playlist deal with the struggle of social & personal no-nos. These include: prostitution, teen violence, infidelity, transgender/transexual identity, racial classifications, incest & underage sex, masturbation, public displays of affection, defying parental rules, homosexuality, S&M, voodoo magic, porn, defying censorship, questioning economic classification and more.

Quite a load! I hope everyone gets offended on some level. 🙂
