(aired 6/24/11)

Today has an unusual theme: none. One of the most delightful aspects of this radio show for me is building shows around a particular topic/word — and getting relevant song suggestions from you listeners. Yet to tell you the truth, that journey of construction also takes a lot of time and energy from start to finish for each show.

I’ve now realized that it’s worth it for me to change my pace for this summer and have more themeless shows. Just awesome music! It still gives me a valuable opportunity to continue to spend time with you on the air every week and simply share artists and songs I like. It will most likely be a temporary break before I move back into full themes later.

In the meantime, please stay connected and share your song requests, your theme ideas for later, artists you like, or feedback. Email me at maya@kskq.org, join the Maya’s Mix Facebook group, or leave a comment here on this blog. Thanks for listening!

Covers: One Degree of Separation

(aired 6/17/11)

covers, willie nelson, cyndie lauper

Ready for some crazy fun? Today’s show spawned from a challenge I’d recently given myself regarding cover songs. A “cover” is a new performance or recording of a previously-recorded song. Earlier this year one of my shows featured all cover songs (March 4th). Today is the second edition of this theme, but with a twist. The lineup has a particular order: each song is a cover of a piece that was originally done by the artist preceding him/her on the playlist. As you can see, the lineage lasts for more than 20 songs, which I originally doubted was possible!

Let me know if you can find a way to continue the list longer. We’d need to find an artist/group who has done a Smashing Pumpkins cover while also having one of their own original songs covered by someone else. Or perhaps you can back up a little further and take a fork in the road at Stevie Nicks or the Dave Matthews Band. Email me if you have an insight, or post it in on the Maya’s Mix Facebook group page.
