(aired 3/25/11)

Spring officially started last Sunday, March 20th. In celebration, today’s show is celebrating the new season. As a range of musical artists share, we’ve been “waiting for the sun,” but the “snow is gone,” and now we’ll “swing into spring”… along with many other twists on the topic. (Of course, a range of weather types prevail in this particular season, as you’ll hear me gripe about, ahem, appreciate during the show.) Spring, beautiful spring…

Musica Magnifica – 1998

(aired 3/11/11)

maya at swarthmore college

Back in my years at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, I was a DJ on the campus station, WSRN. Last December, after finding an old recording of one of my old 1996 shows from freshman year (called “Squeeze Tube from Bottom”), I chose to feature it on Maya’s Mix.

My mom recently dug up a tape of another show from my Swat years, which I played here at KSKQ today. It’s from my junior year, when I was a solo producer for a different show called “Musica Magnifica.” My focus was world music, exploring tunes from all over the globe. Now you’ll get to hear the cassette tape recording of the episode that I originally did on February 28, 1998.

I don’t have an accurate listing of the songs and artists, so you’ll have to just hear the 21-year old Maya tell you about it. I think I sounded kinda similar to now! The pic above shows me in my dorm room.

cover songs, kissed a girl

Who knew that Snoop Doggy Dog’s “Gin and Juice” would work so well as an alternative country song (done by The Gourds)? Or that “F*ck You” could be so beautiful as a violin piece? Or that Willie Nelson would put his own twist on song that was originally in a Jamaican reggae style?

It’s always interesting to hear a musical artist put their own spin on an existing song originally done by someone else. Today was the first Maya’s Mix show dedicated to covers, and I’m sure we’ll be doing more follow-up episodes. Thanks to your abundance of creative suggestions, I’ll want to do some more follow-up shows with this theme. So let me know if you have any other ideas (with a comment here, a message on the Maya’s Mix Facebook page, or email

To check out some cool websites on this subject, I recommend Cover Me, as well as Cover Lay Down. They both offer music to download. Enjoy this show of recycled treasures!
