Squeeze Tube from Bottom

(aired 12/31/10)

This show was a spontaneous trip down memory lane. A couple days ago I found a stack of old cassette tapes, one of which was labeled “Maya & Tim’s last radio show of frosh year, May 1996.”

Yes, for those of you who don’t know my background in radio shows, I started when I was a student at Swarthmore College. Here’s how I described it on my first website (still posted online!) in 1997: “I’m interested in radio programming; last semester (Fall ’96) I interned at Philly’s big public radio station, WHYY. It was a great chance to see the innerworkings of how national & local radio shows are planned, researched, recorded, edited, produced and aired. I also have my own radio show at Swarthmore’s WSRN station. My friend Tim Bragg and I co-DJ a fun show of good eclectic music. Listen to 91.5 FM if you’re in the Swarthmore/Philadelphia area!”

Back in those days we recorded our broadcasts on cassette tapes, which luckily still have enough good sound quality to hear again. I don’t know where any other of my other old recordings might be, but it was fun to stumble onto this one to play on Maya’s Mix today. Our show had the unofficial name of “Squeeze Tube from Bottom.” Ah the creativity of college life!

(aired 12/17/10)

Alabaster, ivory, blanched, milky, snowy, pearly, pallid, vanilla. Or maybe just achlorophyllous. These are all other ways of expressing today’s theme: white.

We haven’t had any big snowstorms yet here in Ashland, Oregon, but I have a feeling the flakes will be falling sometime soon. One of these days I’ll look out the window and see a blanket of whiteness covering everything. For now we get to hear a great lineup of songs celebrating the hue.

Note the other colors featured in past shows: black (October ’10), blue (August ’10), green (March ’10), red (December ’09) and gold/silver (August ’09).

Next week I’ll be out of town, so KSKQ will be replaying my Holiday show from last December. It’ll get you in the spirit. Happy holidays!

Dec 3 2010

(aired 12/3/10)

Last week I decided to brainstorm songs for a potential show theme of Life & Death. The intention was to explore how musicians have addressed both sides of the coin. I ended up getting so many song suggestions from listeners that I realized it would warrant doing a two-part series. So today I started with life, playing a wide variety of songs with that word in the title and lyrics.

As Bob Marley said, “Love the life you live, live the life you love.”
