(aired 8/20/10)

To celebrate this current season of picnics, sunshine, jumpin’ fish, warm breezes, BBQs and green grass, today’s theme is: summer. Throughout history, many artists have created songs about this plentiful time of year, with all its various twists. I enjoyed listening to all the listener suggestions. The funnest part was using GarageBand to compile a medley of 6 diverse versions of “Summertime” into one sequence, which you’ll get to hear about half-way through the show.

Now we get to take a fun road trip together to fully enjoy the delights of summer…

Dough, moolah, greenbacks, loot, bills, readies, wonga, mintage, kitty, cash, coins, change, legal tender, bucks, bread, cabbage, buckaroos, Benjamins, wad, stash, fortune, bundle, dinero, riches, $$$… There are many slang words for this potent subject: money. Call it what you want, this topic has been the focus of many interesting songs.

After choosing the theme for this week, I realized that almost exactly one year ago I did a Maya’s Mix show with Gold & Silver as the theme. I guess August is unofficially the month to celebrate various forms of economic currency!

Last December I started the color theme, focusing the first set on red songs. Then in March the second episode featured green songs. Today is the third installment of this topic, exploring a color that probably has the most songs of any other in the rainbow: blue.

Did you know that more than half the population supposedly identifies blue as their favorite color? It certainly has many symbolic meanings of all sorts, which I discuss on the show.
