The songs today celebrate the joys of all holidays this time of year, including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwaanza, New Year’s, Solstice, and Boxing Day. I used to totally wince at the idea of holiday music. It automatically evokes the idea of the schmaltzy muzac that stores inflict onto us, starting in early November. Plus the annoying tunes can then get stuck in my head, making me want to strangle Rudolph.

But it turns out there is a vast spread of quality music celebrating the highlights of this time of year. It was a pleasure to hear so many impressive recommendations that other people had suggested when I proposed the idea. Some are unique songs that explore associated topics, while others are simply new (and older) versions of the classic covers. Plus there is the added ingredient of humor, since a handful of the songs are comedic jabs at holiday stereotypes. Overall, it’s a fun way to celebrate!

Since the show after mine (“Kids Club”) is on sabbatical for the rest of the month, I was able to have a longer show than usual, playing for an extra 50 minutes. Next week I won’t be playing a live show, since Friday is the day of Christmas, when I’ll be out of town. Appropriately enough, this show will be rebroadcast for anyone who missed it. Happy holidays…

(aired 12/11/09)

balloon imageI’ve been collecting songs with colors in the titles for quite a while now, building a growing playlist in my iTunes. This week I collected ideas from other people for songs with the colors of red and green, inspired by the traditional holiday hues. I ended up with so many great potentials that I decided to focus on just one color for this show: red. Later I’ll find a chance to play the green songs, as well as all the other colors of the rainbow at some point.

By the way, I liked the song idea of “Red, Red Wine” by UB40, but I actually already got a chance to play it for my “Drink” themed show on October 4th.

Here are the passionate, blazing, bright, hot, rosy songs played today:

  1. 99 Luftballons – Nena [suggested by Ed Keller]
  2. Cherry Red – Calvin Owens
  3. Blue, Red, and Grey – The Who [suggested by Mark Mezadourian]

Girls & Boys

(aired 12/4/09)

Gender Part 1

Today’s theme is an exploration of gender identity. Since many worthy songs fit in this general category, there will be two installments. The first one, played today, features more than an hour and a half of songs about girls and boys. Later we’ll get to focus on women and men for a future show.

While the topic may at first sound really simple, it actually opens up a wide range of beliefs and ideas — sociological and personal. Some of these songs offer unique perspectives on gender identification. “Girls who are boys, who like boys to be girls, who do boys like they’re girls, who do girls like they’re boys,” sings the chorus of the first song. And that’s just the beginning! What does it mean to be a boy or girl? Hear for yourself…
