Automatic license plate readers are supposed to make life easier for the police officers on their beat. It’s a much faster way to run a license plate and find out if a car is stolen or on a hot list for another reason. But the indiscriminate collection of license plates, time and location from unwitting drivers also raises important privacy questions.
