House will also screen Sir, No Sir starting at 7:00 pm.
Sir! No Sir! tells the long suppressed story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam. On Tuesday April 15, the Southern Oregon Media Collective will screen Leaves of Green and Weed. From 7:00pm -9:30pm at the Meece Auditorium, center for the visual arts at Southern Oregon University.
Leaves of Green is a must for anyone who is interested in both its legal and ilegal useage. This 60-minute documentary is an investigative report on the world’s most controversial plant. From Reefer Madness to Cheech and Chong we’ve a long way. Watch as the cameras explore the world of industrial hemp to the world of medical marijuana. Through the eyes of the coordinator of the Kentucky hemp growers co-operative, we learn where it started and where it’s all going.
The documentary Weed offers highlights from Amsterdam’s eighth annual five-day-long Cannabis Cup & Hemp Expo. Told in a relatively straightforward manner it follows a group of largely American judges as they visit some of the liberal Dutch city’s various marijuana and hash houses to sample assorted THC containing products in a wide variety of environments. Also covered are snippets of recreational events, many of which are humorous, and educational seminars covering the more serious, non-drug related benefits offered by the versatile hemp plant.
Wednesday, April 14
Wednesday, April 16th the Womens Resource Center will present Killing Us Softly 3″ which is about the portrayals and betrayals of women by mainstream media. This film will be shown at the Meese Auditorium SOU 7 pm.
In Killing Us Softly 3, the newest version of her groundbreaking video Killing Us Softly (1979), Jean Kilbourne surveys the contemporary advertising landscape to critically examine how, why and to what effect corporations and their advertisers use images of girls and women to sell their products. Deconstructing advertisements with the same kind of care and thought that went into constructing them, Kilbourne pushes the discussion of media and advertising beyond the realm of pure market values on the one hand and pure aesthetic values on the other. She sets mass media images of femininity against social reality, advertising fantasy against the actual experience of girls and women, and encourages us to consider the relationship between the stories advertising tells about girls and women and the actual lives girls and women lead.
