Hope Marston, Western Region Organizer of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee explore the 5th anniversary of Guantanamo prison.
On Jan. 11, 2002, the first 20 detainees arrived shackled and blindfolded, from Afghanistan. Since then, nearly 800 prisoners have passed through the detention center in southeastern Cuba.
About 395 foreign men currently held at Guantanamo are allegedly linked to al-Qaida or the Taliban. All are classified as “enemy combatants” _ a status that accords them fewer rights than prisoners of war under international law. Most have been held for years without being charged.
Watch a video about Adel Hamad, husband and father, aid worker and teacher, who has been detained at Guantanamo Bay since 2003.
